I have come to appreciate and enjoy the subtle tone poems that I find his contemplative horizontal bands of color to be. Standing in the misty light one fog-enshrouded winter afternoon in the Rockies, I was struck by how nature seemed to repeat the same gentle variations of color, one sliding into the next without hard edge or delineation, or else how Rothko’s work mirrored nature’s beauty. <div>My last painting trip with my friend and mentor, Reid Galey, was to New Mexico, to paint the countryside in which he grew up and which he loved so much. The high plains were filled with this native flower; it reminded me of southern France and its fields of lavender. There is a full palette of memories tied up herein, of my friend, our trip, his influence on my art, of my never realized dream of going to France with him to paint. When Reid died suddenly in 2010, there were great feelings of loss as well as of a treasured friendship. This, for me, is a celebration of the latter, of a friend and artist who added great color to my life.</div>
