This piece captures the free and easy spirit of a woman relaxing on a day at the beach, wrapped up in the pleasure of the moment and totally oblivious of the world around her. Stretched out with a good book, soaking up the rays, she couldn’t be more in her element.

Many artists are drawn to the quiet, private act of bathing. It is such a simple and intimate moment, so unselfconscious and unreserved. For my wife, it is a refuge, a reprieve from the burdens of the day, a chance to shake off the dust of life and re-anoint herself with the confidence, grace and patience with she greets the day. It can be a time to reflect, to laugh, or to cry. Married to me, it might be a time to do all three. This is not truly a sculpture of her but one she inspired. And until I wrote this, she never knew it. I hope it captures the breath of renewal that she finds there.

Her name both describes her feelings as well as mine in her creation. I love her confidence and self-assurance and the way she boldly ascends the stairs even though they become narrower as they reach higher, even though what awaits her at the top of the stairs is completely unknown. She knows that she is beautiful even if her beauty defies our conventions. And not only does she climb, she dances with a light step and with the graceful sweep of her arms. If she knows fear, she lives with it; if she knows hesitation, she steps beyond it; if she anticipates trial, she will triumph over it with joy.

This is what most of us seem to want and seek, no matter how elusive. So much calls out for our attention, so much challenges us in every moment of every day. This figure, poised and beautiful, does not stand in the shadow of challenge but stands astride it all, calmly, patiently. She defies convention, from her lovely Reubenesque form to her towering hairdo. She chooses not to let worry or confusion champion her; she champions them. She does not ignore the world or the problems that she faces, only chooses to not let them be her master.
